Ingredients

  • 2 pkgs dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 3/4 cup margarine(1 1/2 sticks)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 cups flour
  • ------------------------------------------------
  • filling;
  • 2-8 oz packages cream cheese, softened
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • -----------------------------------------------
  • frosting; thin down some of the filling with milk and drizzle over the top

Preparation

Step 1

dissolve yeast in warm water, let stand 5 minutes. add milk, sugar. 2 beaten eggs, margarine, salt and flour.

mix well until creamy. divide dough in half. roll on floured board to board 8 x 15 inches. spread half of the filling down the center. slash sides of dough and fold over center. this will give it a "braided" look. do the same with the other half of the dough. let rise in warm place until doubled in size. brush with egg wash(beaten egg and little water)

bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. frost while warm and decorate with crushed nuts, cherries or candied fruit.
