Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour.
- 1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder.
- 1/2 teaspoon salt.
- 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar.
- 1/4 cup shortening.
- 1/4 cup butter in small pieces.
- 1 1/3 cups buttermilk.
- 2 tablespoons melted butter.
- 2 tablespoons of brown sugar.
- 1 tablespoon of sugar.

Preparation
Step 1
Stir together first four ingredients.
Cut shortening and butter into flour mixture until crumbly.
Stir in buttermilk until dry ingredients moistened.
Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead 3 to 4 times.
Roll to three-quarter inch thickness.
Cut with 3 1/2 inch scalloped cutter.
Place on lightly greased baking sheet.
Bake at 400° for 15 minutes or until golden.
Brush shortcakes with melted butter.
Combine sugars and sprinkle evenly.
