Ingredients

  • Cake:
  • 2 c flour
  • 2 c sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 4 heaping Tbsp. cocoa
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 c boiling water
  • 1/2 c buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Frosting:
  • 1 3/4 sticks butter
  • 4 heaping Tbsp. cocoa
  • 6 Tbsp. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 1/4 c powdered sugar

Step 1

Cake:
In large mixing bowl, combine flour sugar and salt. In a saucepan, melt butter and whisk in cocoa. Add boiling water and allow mixture to boil for 30 seconds. Pour over flour mixture and stir to cool. In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla. Add to flour mixture. Pour into a 13x18 lightly greased jelly roll pan. Bake 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

Icing:
Melt butter in saucepan, whisk in cocoa. Remove from heat, add milk, vanilla and powdered sugar. Beat until smooth and immediately pour over warm cake, covering it completely. The icing will take about 2 hours to completely set up, but it can be served warm or cooled.
