Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 pound light brown sugar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 1 t. baking powder
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 t. vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • Walnut glaze
  • 1 cup sifted confectioners sugar
  • 2 T. butter
  • 6 T. cream
  • 1/2 t. vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Preparation

Step 1

Beat butter and shortening together. Gradually add the sugars, creaming until mixture is ight and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time.

Sift together flour, salt and baking powder. Add sifted ingredients alternately with milk and vanilla to creamed mixture. Stir in walnuts.

Pour batter into greased and floured 10-inch tube pan. Bake in 350 dgree oven 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until done when tested with a straw. Cool on rack 10 minutes, then remove from pan and place on a rack over a piece of waxed paper. Pour walnut glaze over hot cake. If glaze falls onto the waxed paper, scoop it up and put it back on the cake.

Walnut glaze:

Cream sugar and butter. Add cream, vanilla and walnuts. Blend well.
