c confectioners sugar
c butter, softened
(11oz) pkg milk chocolate chips
(10oz) jar maraschino cherries, well drained
T vegetable shortening
Line baking sheet with waxed paper. In small bowl, combine sugar, butter and milk, mix until stiff dough forms. Shape dough evenly around each cherry and place on baking sheet. Freeze until very firm. In small saucepan, melt chocolate chips and shortening over low heat until smooth. Remove coated cherries from freezer and dip each into the melted chocolate, coating completely. Return to baking sheet and chill for 1 hour or until chocolate is firm. ***If you use cherries with stems it's easier to hold onto the cherries while you dip them in chocolate. If not, then you can use toothpicks to stick into cherries to dip in chocolate or put on spoon and lower into chocolate if you have nothing else, a slotted spoon is best.
