Ingredients

  • 1/3 C. soft butter
  • 3/4 C. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 T. grated lemon
  • 2 C. flour
  • 1/4 t. salt
  • 1 egg white, slightly beaten

Step 1

Make two separate batches.

Cream butter and sugar. Mix in egg, egg yolk and lemon rind. Mix flour and salt; stir into creamed mixture & work into ball. Separate ball into two batches. On one batch of dough, leave the natural color. On the second batch, add red food coloring and blend well.

Heat oven to 350. Shape pieces of dough the size of a small walnut -- roll like playdough into a pencil- thin roll, 3-4" long. Roll a natural roll and a red roll. Put the 2 pieces side-by-side, and start twisting and rolling together from one end to the other; curl the top to bend like a candy can shape. Spray cookie sheet lightly with Pam. Brush with egg white; bake 8-10 minutes. Cool and remove from cookie sheet.
