Ingredients

  • 2 pounds each Granny Smith and Golden Delicious apples, cored, peeled, sliced
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preparation

Step 1

Combine apples, water and lemon juice in a heavy large Dutch oven; bring to a boil on high heat. Reduce heat to medium; cover and simmer until apples are tender, about 20 minutes. Uncover and cook until mixture is thick, stirring frequently, about 10 minutes longer. Mash apples slightly with potato masher until chunky applesauce forms. Stir in sugar and cinnamon. Cool. Add more juice if desired.
(Can be made 2 days ahead. Keep refrigerated.)
