Ingredients
- 1 pound superlean ground beef or ground sirloin
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
- 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon prepared mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (add more to taste)
- 4 multigrain or whole-wheat hamburger buns or rolls
- 2 ounces shredded reduced-fat monterey
- jack or cheddar cheese (optional)

Directions
1.Brown the ground beef, onion, and green pepper over medium heat in a large nonstick skillet.
2.Stir in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder; mix thoroughly. Reduce the heat to simmer, cover, and let simmer for 20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes or so.
3.Add salt (if desired) and pepper to taste and stir. Serve one-fourth of the mixture over the bottom of a split multigrain bun or roll. Sprinkle each with a tablespoon or two of cheese, if desired. Serve with or without the top of the bun or roll.
