Ingredients
- Cookie:
- 1/2 C shortening
- 1 C sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 21/4 C all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp soda
- Filling:
- 2 C finely chopped dates
- 3/4 C sugar
- 3/4 C water
- 1/2 C chopped nuts, if desired.

Step 1
mix thoroughly shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Blend in flour, salt and soda. Cover. Chill l hour. Prepare filling.
Combine all ingredients in saucepan. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens. Cook thoroughly. (I would think you could add a little less sugar as dates are so sweet to begin with.
Heat oven to 400. Roll dough 1/16 in thick on lightly floured cloth-covered board. Cut into 3-inch circles spoon 1 tsp filling on half of each circle. Fold dough over filling; press edges. Bake 1 in apart on ungreased baking sheet. Brush with milk, sprinkle with sugar bake 8 to 10 min or until very light brown. Immediately remove from baking sheet. 4 1`/2 doz.
