Ingredients

  • 3/4 C shortening
  • 1 1/2 C sugar
  • 1/2 C molasses
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda in 3/4 C hot water
  • 1 Tbs cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp cloves
  • ~ 6 C flour
  • 1 box sifted powdered sugar
  • 3/4 stick margarine
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • milk

Preparation

Step 1

Cream shortening and sugar. Add molasses, egg, and salt. Mix. Put soda in hot water and mix well. Add cinnamon and cloves. Mix in enough flour to make dough stiff (up to 6 C).
Roll out dough on floured surface…. not too thin. Cut with cookie cutters. Bake @ 375* 'til just barely done (soft). Cool and frost.

Frosting: mix powdered sugar and softened margarine… add vanilla and then milk 1 Tbs at a time until frosting consistency. Decorate.
