Apple Sausage Cheddar Torte

This recipe won first place at the North Carolina State Fair in 2011, in the apple category. '

Ingredients

  • 1/2 C. chopped onions
  • 2 c. peeled, chopped fresh apples such as Granny Smith
  • 1 T. sugar
  • 1/4 t. cinnamon
  • l c. ricotta cheese
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 c. shredded cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 lb cooked sausage

Preparation

Step 1

Have one deep dish large pie crust shell baked and ready to be filled....
Preheat oven to 350 degrees....

In frying pan melt 2 T butter....add :

1/2 C. chopped onions
2 c. peeled, chopped fresh apples such as Granny Smith
1 T. sugar
1/4 t. cinnamon

Cook for several minutes until apples are tender....remove from heat...

In prepared pie shell, pour 3/4 lb cooked sausage in bottom of pie shell..
Layer cooked apple mixture on top of sausage

Make cheese topping as follows:

l c. ricotta cheese
4 eggs
2 c. shredded cheddar cheese

Mix ingredients well....pour on top of apples.....bake in 350 degree oven for 40-45 min....let sit for 10 min. and serve....looks delicious...really want to try this...could make this as spicy or mild as preferred......
