Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons aluminum free baking soda. Look for “Bob’s Red Mill Premium Baking Soda”
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch or arrowroot powder (I used cornstarch)
  • 5 tablespoons coconut oil
  • Look for organic, extra virgin, cold-pressed, unrefined coconut oil. Nutiva is a great brand.
  • Essential oils (optional – I used 3 drops of ylang-ylang, 4 drops of sweet orange, and 2 drops of tea tree)

Preparation

Step 1

Some people find too much baking soda irritates their skin. Start with 2 tablespoons. If you find that you need more protection you can re-melt the oil and add more baking soda up to a total of a ¼ cup.

Find two metal or glass containers. One should be able to nest inside the other. Add the coconut oil to the inner container and add boiled water to the outer container.

Nest the containers together and mash the oil with a fork until all the lumps are gone. You want the oil to be warmed, but not completely melted. Mix in the other ingredients, ensuring there are no lumps. Pour into a jar with a good seal.

If you do over-melt the oil, place the jar into your refrigerator for a day or so. You can still use it, but if the oil is too warm the ingredients will separate.
