Fried green tomatoes southern style

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg lightly beaten
  • 1/2 c buttermilk
  • 1/2 c flour divided
  • 1/2 c cornmeal
  • 1 t salt
  • 1/2 t pepper
  • 3 medium green tomatoes cut in 1/3 in slices
  • vegetable oil (I use canola)
  • salt to taste

Preparation

Step 1

combine egg and buttermilk & set aside
combine 1/4 c flour, cornmeal and salt and pepper in shallow bowl
dredge tomatoes in 1/4 c remaining flour-then egg mixture-then cornmeal mixture
pour oil 1/4 to 1/2 in depth in large skillet (cast iron if you have one)
heat to 375
drop tomatoes by batches in hot oil
cook 2 mins ea side or till golden
drain on paper towels or on rack
sprinkle with salt while still hot
