Apple Dumplings

Ingredients

  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 c. water
  • 2 c. flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 c shortening
  • 1/4 c sugar
  • 3 c. shredded, peeled cooking apples 3-4 medium
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2/3 c. Milk
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Preparation

Step 1

Sauce
In large pan combine 2 c. sugar, water and butter, 1/4 tsp cinnamon and nutmeg. bring to a boil. Boil 5 minutes, set aside (will have 2 cup of sauce).

Dough
in large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt in pastry blender, cut in shortening until pea size.
Make a well in center. add milk all at once. Stir just to moisten. kneed dough 10-12 strokes or until nearly smooth. roll out 12x10 rectangle.

Filling
combine 1/4 c. sugar, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, set aside
sprinkle apples evenly over dough. sprinkle sugar mixture. Roll dough into a spiral starting from long side. Pinch to seal seam. cut into 1 inch thick pieces. Place in 13x9 baking dish. Pour sauce over. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 min or till brown. cool 30 min.
