Date and Nut Bars

I made these one year for Christmas. If you enjoy very rich, nutty treats, these are for you! They are really good!

Ingredients
- 1/3 C boiling water
- 2 C dates, pitted and chopped
- 1/2 C shortening
- 1 C white sugar
- 1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 2 eggs
- 1 C all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 C chopped walnuts
- 1/4 C confectioners sugar
Preparation
Step 1
1. Pour boiling water over dates and set aside to cool. Preheat oven to 325 Grease 10x10 baking pan.
2. Cream together shortening and white sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Add the dates, including any water; mix well. Sift together the four, cinnamon, nutmeg, and baking soda; stir into the date mixture. Then stir in nuts.
3. Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared 10x10 pan and bake for 45 min. in the preheated oven. when cool, cut into bars and roll each bar in confectioners' sugar.
