French Onion Soup

Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 6 large yellow onions (about 4 pounds) sliced thin
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 - 900 ml Campbell’s boxes of Beef Broth
- 2 hamburger buns
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère Cheese
Preparation
Step 1

* %{color: red}Preheat oven to 350⁰F%
* Spray the inside of a Dutch oven with cooking spray.
* Place the butter in the pot.
* Add sliced onions to pot
* Cover and place in oven for 2 ½ hours. Stir occasionally.
* Remove from oven and place on a burner.
*%{color: royalblue}The above step adds flavour, but is not necessary%*
* Cook sliced onions, uncovered, stirring frequently until the liquid evaporates and the onions brown, about 20 minutes.
* Stir in the broth, salt and pepper.
* Reduce heat and simmer covered for 30 minutes.
* While the soup simmers, remove a thin piece from the top and bottom of the hamburger buns, use a sharp bread knife. Split in half, you now have 4 round pieces of bread with no top or bottom crust.
* Arrange on a baking sheet and bake in a 400⁰F oven for about 10 minutes, until the bread is very dry, crisp and golden at edges.
Set oven to broiler. Adjust oven rack to 6” from broiler element.
* Fill individual French Onion Soup dishes with soup, top with crisp hamburger bun, then sprinkle evenly with Gruyѐre Cheese.
* Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 3 minutes.
* Let cool 5 minutes before serving.
