Swiss Cheese Onions

  • 4-6 Onions, sliced thick
  • 2 T butter
  • 2 T flour
  • Dash pepper
  • Dash nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 C milk
  • 1 1-1/1 c swiss cheese
  • 1/2 loaf sourdough bread
  • butter

Butter bread & cube in large croutons.

Par boil onions in boiling salted water until tender-crisp. Drain.

In saucepan, melt butter. Stir in flour, pepper & nutmeg. Cook until bubbly. Stir in milk all at once, whisking until smooth. Cook over medium heat until thickened. Add cheese and cook until melted.

Put drained onions in buttered casserole dish. Pour sauce over. Pile buttered bread cubes along sides of dish. Bake until bubbly & bread browned.
