French Coffeecake

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb butter (2 sticks)
  • 3 cups sifted flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cup evaporated milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 squares unsweetened chocolate or 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Preparation

Step 1

Heat oven to 325 degrees.

Blend shortening with dry ingredients until it resembles coarse meal. Set aside 1/2 cup to use for topping. Add 3 eggs, milk and vanilla to remaining mixture, beat medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour into greased pan, add melted chocolate and marble it through with spatula. Sprinkle remaining mixture on top. Bake for 1 hour.
