Pudding, Chomeur

This simple but tasty pudding is a French Canadian dessert developed during the Great Depression when money was scarce.

Ingredients

  • Sauce:
  • 1-1/2 cups maple syrup or maple flavored pancake syrup
  • 3/4 cups water
  • 2 tsp butter or margarine
  • Cake:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp slat
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup shredded cocoanut

Preparation

Step 1

Sauce:
Add syrup to water in small casserole. Bring to a boil. Remove from burner. Add butter and set aside.

Cake:

Combine flour, baking powder and salt. Mix well.
In a separate bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add beaten egg and mix well
Add dry ingredient to mixture alternating with milk. Mix until smooth.
Spread evenly in a greased 8” x 8” square pan.
Pour sauce on mixture and sprinkle with cocoanut.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 35 minutes
Serve warm with ice cream or table cream. Enjoy!
