Ingredients

  • 1 9-inch unbaked pie shell
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • (freshly grated nutmeg, to taste - secret ingredient)
  • 6 to 8 large McIntosh apples (or Granny Smith apples if a tarter flavor is desired) I use half and half
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Mix 1/2 cup of the sugar with the cinnamon (and nutmeg).

Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. Arrange the apples in layers in the pie shell, sprinkling with the cinnamon-sugar mixture as you layer. Mound the apples quite high in the pie shell, as they will cook down.

In a small mixing bowl, combine the flour and remaining 1/2 cup sugar and cut in the butter until crumbly. (I use my pastry blender.) Pat this mixture by large spoonsful evenly over the apples, forming a crust. Seal at the edges.

Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until golden brown.
