Ingredients
- 2 c soft whole-wheat bread crumbs
- 1/4 c butter, melted
- 3 c tart apples, peeled, sliced
- 3/4 c sugar
- 3/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp grated lemon peel
- 3 c sliced peeled pears
- 1/4 c boiling water
Preparation
Step 1
Combine bread crumbs and butter; place 1/3 of the mixture into a buttered 1 1/2 qt casserole.
Cover with apples.
Mix sugar, nutmeg, and lemon peel; spread 1/2 over apples; add another 1/3 of crumb mixture.
Top with all the pears and the remaining sugar mixture.
Pour boiling water over; cover with remaining crumbs.
Cover and bake in moderate oven (375 degrees) for 45 minutes.
Remove cover and bake about 10 minutes longer, or until brown.
