Apple Walnut Cobbler

A cross between a coffee cake and a pudding, this apple walnut cobbler cuts into squares. Or, spoon portions into dessert cups and pass the cream.

Ingredients

  • 5 cups 5 cups tart apples, thinly sliced, peeled (Cortland, Granny Smith, Jonathan or Rome Beauty)
  • 3/4 cup 3/4 cup walnuts, chopped, divided
  • 3/4 cup 3/4 cup sugar, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1/3 cup 1/3 cup margarine or butter, melted
  • Half and half or light cream (Optional)

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 325°F. Lightly grease a 2-quart square baking dish.

Spread the apples in prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup walnuts, 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together flour, 1/2 cup sugar and baking powder.

In a small bowl combine egg, evaporated milk and melted margarine or butter. Stir egg mixture into dry ingredients until smooth. Pour evenly over apples; sprinkle with remaining walnuts.

Bake 50 to 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Serve cobbler warm, cut into squares. If desired, serve with half and half or light cream.
