Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

By

All the great taste of the famous hoagie, but these are made with ground beef and served on large, buttered and toasted hamburger buns.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped
  • 1 green pepper, coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 cup steak sauce, (like A-1 sauce)
  • 1/2 cup beef broth (or 1/2 tsp beef bouillon granules dissolved in 1/2 cup boiling water)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 4 large hamburger rolls (I like Sara Lee's)
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for toasting rolls
  • 8 slices of provolone or American cheese, or Cheez Whiz cheese spread

Preparation

Step 1

Add the oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook 5-6 minutes or until no longer pink but not browned. Add the onion and bell pepper and continue to cook 2-3 minutes or just until crisp tender. Drain off any fat, if desired. Stir in the steak sauce and beef broth. Season with salt and pepper. Continue to cook until liquid is almost all gone, stirring constantly.

Butter the cut sides of the buns. Toast the buttered sides in a hot skillet on medium-high heat. Set aside.

To serve, place a slice of cheese on the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Top with a scoop of the meat mixture. Top with another cheese slice; cover with the top halves of buns. (May need to microwave a few seconds to completely melt the cheese).
