Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs ground chuck
- 4 (1 oz) slices american cheese
- 4 regular hamburger buns
- Mayonnaise
- 3 tbsp. butter
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp. white vinegar
- 4 tsp. liquid smoke
- 1/2 tsp. tabasco
- 2 tbsp. worcestershire sauce
- 6 Tbsp. dark brown sugar
Preparation
Step 1
Divide meat into 4 equal parts and form into patties 3/4 inch thick and 3 1/2 inch thick and 3 1/2 to 4 inches in diameter. Keep in refrigerator until ready to use. In a saucepan melt butter and add ketchup, vinegar, liquid smoke, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar. Over low heat let this bubble for a few minutes. Remove from heat This sauce is for basting the patties.
Allow charcoal to burn down until coals are gray or to a cooking temperature of 250. Generously baste patties and place basted side down on the grill; baste top and cook for 4 minutes. Turn 2 times at 4 minute intervals, generously basting both sides each turn. Baste top, turn and top with cheese; cook until cheese melts. Remove and serve on warmed (browned) buns, spread with mayonnaise. This should produce medium rare, juicy burgers; adjust cooking time to grill heat
