Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
- 1/3 cup wheat germ
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp dried marjoram
- Dash of garlic powder
- 6 tbsp butter, chilled
- 2/3 cup buttermilk or yogurt
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 450 F. In a medium-size bowl, combine flour, 1 tbsp wheat germ, baking powder, baking soda, basil, marjoram, and garlic powder. With a fork or pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the buttermilk or yogurt; mix.
Turn the dough out onto a work surface covered with the remaining wheat germ. Roll the dough in the wheat germ to a 3/4-inch thickness. With a biscuit cutter or glass, cut into 10 to 12 biscuits.
Place on a baking sheet and bake until lightly browned, about 12 minutes. Serve warm with Safflower Butter (recipe in collection).
