Apple Leather (Dehydrator)
By Hklbrries
Making leathers is so incredibly easy. All you have to do is simply spread applesauce on top of the leather sheets lining a dehydrator tray, even the surface out with a knife, and turn on the dehydrtor. When it is dry, applesauce will peel off the leather sheet. If there are any tacky areas, just give the leather a little more time to dry. You can make your own applesauce or dry commercially prepared applesauce.
If you choose to dry commercially prepared applesauce, select a variety that does not have sugar added. Too much sugar in a leather can make it sticky and difficult to pull away from the plastic leather sheet. Plus, everything containing sugar that is dried tastes sweeter - the sugars are concentrated, although the caloric value remains the same. Any flavorings, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, etc, can be added to the applesauce depending upon your own individual taste preferences. Also, applesauce is a very good basis for making any other fruit leather because it contains natural pectin. Pectin is a bonding agent; it helps food to bond to itself - to hold together. Use 1/2 applesauce and 1/2 strawberries or raspberries.
