Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups scalded milk
- 1/3 cup shortening
- 4 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 2 packages yeast
- 1/4 cup lukewarm water
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 4 3/4 cups sifted flour
- Melted butter
- Granulated sugar
Preparation
Step 1
Pour hot milk over shortening, sugar, salt and spices in mixing bowl; cool to lukewarm. Stir yeast with water and add with eggs to lukewarm milk mixture. Stir in flour and beat until well mixed. Cover and let stand in warm place about one hour, until dough is doubled in bulk.
Turn out onto well-floured board; turn dough over 2 or 3 times to shape it into a soft ball. Roll out lightly, about 1/2-inch thick, being careful not to stretch dough. Cut with doughnut cutter; place carefully 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets. Brush with melted butter and let rise in warm place until double in bulk, about 30 minutes.
Bake at 425 F for 8 to 10 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven, brush each doughnut with butter and roll in granulated sugar.
