Step 1
Melt butter in a saucepan. Stir in sugar and vanilla, add 2 tablespoons water to thin to a nice smooth consistency. Add additional water if a thinner glaze is desired. Keep glaze warm while frosting cake.
Variations:
Browned Butter Glaze - continue to heat butter over medium heat until it becomes a delicate brown color.
Butter Rum Glaze - substitute 2 tablespoons white rum for vanilla.
Chocolate Glaze - stir in 2 oz slightly melted unsweetened chocolate.
Orange or Lemon Glaze - Add 1/2 teaspoon grated orange or lemon peel along with orange or lemon juice for the water.
