Ingredients

  • 1 cup unbleached flour
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 Tbsp melted butter

Preparation

Step 1

Mix together unbleached flour, sugar, soda & salt. Cut in butter, then mix in whole wheat flour and oats. Stir in buttermilk and melted butter to moisten all ingredients well. Turn out dough onto a floured board. Knead 10 times and shape into a ball. Place in a greased pie dish or 1 qt baking dish. With a sharp knife, cut a cross on the top to allow for expansion and even baking.

Bake in a preheated 375 oven for 40-50 minutes or toothpick test. Cool slightly on a rack before slicing.
Is good toasted.
