Baklava

Ingredients

  • Syrup:
  • 1 3/4 c sugar
  • 1 1/4 c water
  • 3/4 teas lemon juice
  • Baklava:
  • 1 pound filo dough
  • 1/2 pd clarified butter
  • 1/4 pound chopped walnutes
  • 1 T sugar

Preparation

Step 1

Syrup:
Dissolve sugar in water. Bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes. Add lemon juice. Bring to boil again. Set aside to cool.

Baklava:
Open filo dough. Place a 15 X 10 inch baking pan over ti and cut all around the edges and remove, but reserve excess dough to place between layers of dough. Grease baking pan. Line the pan with 2 layers of dough. Brush top with butter. Line 2 more layers and brush top with butter. Continue in this manner until half of the dough is used.

Spread a mixture of nuts and sugar over dough.

Arrange the other half of the dough on top in the same manner as the bottom half. Brush the top layer with butter. Diagonally cut the baklave fron top to bottom into diamond shapes.

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 10 minutes. Pour 1 spoonful of syrup over each diamond.
