Red Velvet Cake

  • Icing:
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 1/2 T. cocoa
  • 1/2 c. red food coloring
  • 2 1/4 c. cake flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 T. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 T. vinegar
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 T. flour
  • 1 c. crisco

Preparation

Step 1

Cream sugar with shortening. Add cocoa, eggs and food coloring. Sift flour, salt together and add alternating with buttermilk and vanilla. Mix soda and vinegar and add to misture. Make 2 or 3 layers. Bake 350 degrees 20 to 25 minutes until done. Cool and frost.

Icing: Combine milk and flour and cook until thick. Cool. Cream sugar, crisco and vanilla and add to cool mixture. Beat 5 minutes or until creamy.
