Homemade (Paper Bag) Microwave Popcorn
By Hklbrries
"First, you've got your popcorn purists, the ones who use the gourmet kernels and air poppers. Then, you've got your frontier-spirit types who buy the old-fashioned poppers and stick them in the fireplace. Then you've got your fans of the standard method: Get a deep pot with a quarter inch of oil. Wait till it gets hot, test to see if a single kernel pops, then add the rest of the corn and shake until the sound of popping abates.
Then, of course, there's the microwave crowd. Grab a bag filled with kernels and bad stuff - artificial flavors, saturated fats, trans fats - and stick it in the microwave for 3 minutes. Eat it right out of the bag; no fuss, no cleanup.
What if you could have the convenience of the microwave version but control of ingredients that the purists crave?
Get a brown paper lunch bag; get some popcorn; put about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of popcorn in the brown paper bag; close the top of the bag and fold it over twice; stick it in the microwave for three minutes or so, until the sound of popping stops.
Then you carefully open the bag, put the popcorn in a bowl and add the oil of your choice, melted butter, salt and seasonings.
Watch the bag carefully the first couple of times until you learn how quickly your microwave will cook it. Maybe you want to stop halfway and shake the bag or turn it over until you learn the idiosyncrasise of your particular oven. Worst-case scenario? A few burned kernels if you wait too long, a few unpopped kernels if you remove the bag prematurely.
It's cheaper and better for you than the yellow, goopy, packaged stuff."
