Michigan Sauce

This is a favorite topping for hot dogs and hamburgers and is very popular in upstate New York State/Lake Champlain region.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion (chopped fine)
  • 2 tsp vinegar
  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • 4 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1 bottle ketchup
  • 1 pound ground beef/hamburg
  • salt & pepper to taste

Preparation

Step 1

Brown beef in large skillet. Drain
Add chopped onions, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce and mustard
Empty ketchup into mixture
Pour vinegar and lemon juice into the ketchup bottle and swirl to clean out any remaining ketchup
Pour this onto the cooking mixture

Cover

Cook 1 hour or a little more over medium heat stirring often and making sure mixture doesn't burn on bottom of skillet.

While this is cooking cook up some hot dogs and/or hamburgers, get out buns

This topping is great served over hot dogs & buns or over hamburgers & buns

Place any remaining sauce in a covered container in the refrigerator or freezer.
