Cincinnati Style Chili

By

This is a Cincinnati tradition. There are many variations, but I like this one. Every time I drive through that part of the country, I stop at Goldstar or Skyline.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Ground beef
  • 1 can (15oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tbsp Chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1 1/2 tsp vinegar
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 medium onion chopped

Preparation

Step 1

In a skillet, brown the ground beef, drain and rinse

In the big chili cooking pot, mix ground beef and water until soupy.

Mix in all other ingredients. Onion is optional. Some people mix in to cook, others like it on the side.

Simmer, uncovered for 3 hours. Stir occasionally. (We can never wait that long)

Top with grated cheddar, onions, chili beans, crackers or use as a sauce over spaghetti.
