Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 4 cups sifted flour
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp allspice
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp mace
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 1/2 cups pecans, coarsely chopped
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 375 F. Thoroughly coat the bottom and sides of a 13-by-9-inch baking pan with butter or non-stick vegetable oil spray.
Cream the butter in a large mixing bowl. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Add the vanilla. Sift the flour with the baking soda, cinnamon, allspice, cloves and mace. Add the flour mixture to the batter, 1/2 cup at a time, alternating with the applesauce. Mix the chopped pecans into the batter.
Pour the batter into the baking pan and smooth the surface with a rubber spatula. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Remove from the oven. Cool completely, then cut into 2-inch bars. Remove from the pan with the spatula and transfer to a serving plate or airtight storage container.
