Traditional Sloppy Joes
By Addie
“Brown sugar, cider vinegar and mustard are the “secret” ingredients in this version of a family favorite.”
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small yellow onion
- 1/2 medium green bell pepper
- 11/2 lb. ground beef
- 1 can (8 oz.) tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 2 Tablespoons cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 8 sandwich-size crusty rolls
Preparation
Step 1
Chop the onion and deseed and chop the bell pepper. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and bell pepper and sauté, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 4 minutes.
Add the ground beef and cook until browned and crumbly, about 5 minutes. Drain fat.
Add the tomato sauce, brown sugar, tomato paste, cider vinegar, salt, mustard and black pepper. Cook for 4 minutes. To serve, divide sloppy joe mixture evenly among the rolls.
Serving Suggestion:
If crusty sandwich size rolls are unavailable at your supermarket, cut a French baguette into four pieces to serve these sandwiches.
