French Toast

Ingredients

  • Batter
  • 2 cups 2 cups of half and half
  • 6 6 eggs
  • 1/4 tsp 1/4 tsp of cinnamon (or to taste)
  • 2 tsp 2 tsp of vanilla
  • Dash Dash of nutmeg (optional)
  • Day old Bread.
  • Topping Ingredients
  • 1 stick 1 stick of softened butter
  • 1 cup 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp 1/4 tsp of cinnamon (or to taste)

Preparation

Step 1

Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl. Grease a pan with butter (I use unsalted butter, but you can use either. I also use a rimmed cookie sheet).

Cut bread in to 1 inch slices and arrange on the pan. (I bought the bread the day before and sliced it about an hour or 2 before I was ready to coat and left it in the bag, just to get it a little more dry).

Pour the batter over the bread. (I usually use about 3/4s of it becuase I don't want it to be too soggy).

Then I flip the slices a few times to make sure both sides are coated well. Place in the fridge for a couple of hours (or overnight/ 8-9 hours is ideal).

Make sure to get the bread to room temperature before baking (I've left it out for about 2-3 hours).

Preheat oven to 375 and put bread in for about 15 minutes.

While bread is in the oven for 15 minutes mix together the topping.

Take bread out at 15 minutes and coat the top of the bread with the topping mixture and return to oven for about 20-30 minutes.

Important tips: day old bread (with not too many holes) and room temperature before cooking. You can use more or less batter to soak in, depending on how much bread you have. This is what I did for one loaf of regular sized bread.
