Ingredients

  • Brownies:
  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup cocoa
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 cup instant nonfat dry milk
  • 1 cup soft shortening
  • 4 T water
  • 4 unbeaten eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • Frosting:
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 3 T butter
  • 1/4 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 square unsweetened chocolate (1 oz.)
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Step 1

Brownies:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 9x13 pan and sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cocoa and instant nonfat dry milk. Add all at once shortening, water, eggs and vanilla. Mix until well blended, then beat hard 1 minute. Spread batter in greased pan. Bake on center rack of oven for 25 minutes or until batter pulls apart from sides of pan. Cool in pan about 30 minutes.

Frosting:
Boil all except vanilla for 2 minutes over moderate heat stirring constantly. Take from heat. Add vanilla. Beat, without cooling until thick enough to spread.
