Ingredients
- 12 oz 90% lean ground beef
- 4 oz hot or sweet Italian sausage, casings removed
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/4 t red pepper flakes
- 1/4 t dried oregano
- 1 28-oz can crushed tomatoes
- 8 oz spaghetti, broken into rough 2" pieces
- 2 cups water
- 1 1/2 t salt
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 6 T chopped fresh basil
- 4 oz shredded Italian cheese blend (about 1 cup)
Preparation
Step 1
1. Adjust oven rack to the upper-middle position and heat the broiler. Cook the beef and sausage in a large ovensafe nonstick skillet over medium heat, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink, about 5 mins. Drain the meat on a paper towel-lined plate and pour off the fat from the skillet. Return the meat to the skillet. Add teh garlic, pepper flakes and oregano and cook until fragrant, about 1 min.
2. Stir in the tomatoes, spaghetti, water and salt. Cover and cook, stirring often, until the spaghetti begins to soften, about 7 mins. Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to simmer, covered, until the spaghetti is al ente, about 7 mins.
3. Stir in the cream, basil and 1/3 cup of the cheese. Sprinkle with the remaining 2/3 cup cheese and broil until the surface is spotty brown, about 3 mins. Let cool 5 mins. Serve.
