Ingredients
- Custard frosting:
- 6 egg yolks, room temperature
- 6 egg whites, room temperature
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/3 c. water
- 1 c. sugar
- 2 Tbs. baking powder
- 1 &1/3 c. all-purpose flour, sifted 3 times
- 1/3 c. cornstarch
- 2 c. milk
- 1/3 c. sugar
- 1 beaten egg
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. butter
- 1 c. powdered sugar
Preparation
Step 1
Beat egg yolks well. Add ¾ c. sugar very gradually, add dry ingredients, alternating with water. In separate bowl, beat egg whites stiff with ¼ c. sugar. Fold into yolk mixture. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pour cake mixture into three ungreased 8 in. round pans & bake for 20 min. Invert pans immediately on rack.
Custard:
In saucepan, mix 1st 5 ingredients together. Cook until thick, stirring frequently. Remove from heat; beat with wooden spoon until until cool. Beat butter & powdered sugar together; add cooled custard & mix well.
Frost cake.
