Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups shortening
- 2/3 cup of molasses
- 2 cups white sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/2-1 tsp ground cloves (1 tsp will be quite strong)
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp. plus 1 tsp soda
- 4 cups flour (can use i/2 white and 1/2 whole wheat)
- extra sugar for rolling
Preparation
Step 1
Melt the shortening over low heat and then let cool. Add the molasses, sugar and eggs and beat well. Mix in the cloves, cinnamon, salt and baking soda. Mix in the flour. Chill for 60-90 minutes, it won't get really firm. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls, roll in white sugar and bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.
I got this recipe from Kathy Ness who had put it in Penzeys Spices Catalog
