Croque Monsieur

We have this on date night with a beautiful side salad. I love using mountain bread that I get from my nearby grocers.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups hot milk
  • salt pepper
  • nutmeg
  • 12 ounces swiss cheese or gruyere
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
  • thick sliced bread
  • dijon mustard
  • 8 ounces Virginia baked ham, sliced

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 400*

Melt the butter over low heat and add the flour all at once, stirring for at least 2 minutes. Slowly pour the hot milk into the butter mixture, whisk constantly until the sauce thickens. Off the heat add salt and pepper nutmeg and 1/2 cup of both cheeses.

Toast the bread, bake for 5 minutes. Turn over and bake another 2 minutes. Lightly brush half the bread with mustard, and add ham and then cheese. Spread with sauce mixture and bake for 3 to 5 minutes.
