- 1 (16-ounce) can tomatoes, chopped
- 6 ounces tomato juice
- 7 cups water
- 1/2 pound fresh green beans
- 1 green pepper, diced
- 1 cup celery, diced
- 1/2 cup celery greens
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon thyme
- 1/2 cup pearl barley
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 1 large potato, diced

Brown hamburger, drain and add to pot.
Combine all ingredients except the carrot and potato and bring to a boil. Simmer 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Add carrots and cook 10 minutes.
Add potato and cook 20 minutes.
