Ingredients
- 4 1/2 C flour
- 4 t ground ginger
- 2 t baking soda
- 1 1/2 t cinnamon
- 1 t cloves
- 1/4 t salt
- 1 1/2 C shortening
- 2 C sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 C molasses
- 3/4 C coarse sugar or granulated sugar

Step 1
Stir together the flour, ginger, soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Set aside.
Beat shortening until softened. Gradually add the 2 c sugar, beat until fluffy. Add eggs and molasses; beat well. Add half of flour mixture, beat until combined. Finish adding flour by stirring in with a wooden spoon.
Using a small scoop, shape dough into 2" balls. Roll in coarse sugar and place on UNbuttered cookie sheet about 2 1/2" apart.
Bake 350 deg for 12-14 mins. Cookies will be light brown and puffed. Overbaking will make them hard. Let cool 2 minutes then transfer to a wire rack for complete cooling.
