Ingredients

  • 6 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup double-acting baking powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives (have also used rosemary)
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 cups shortening
  • 1 1/4 cup buttermilk

Preparation

Step 1

Thoroughly combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl.
Cut in shortening with a pastry blender.
Stir in buttermilk until just moistened. (If too dry, add 1/4-1/2 cup more buttermilk.)
Turn onto well-floured surface. Knead 8-10 times. Roll out 1/2" thick. Cut into 2" squares.
Bake @ 400 deg., 13-15 min.

To freeze & use up to 3 months later-----
Place unbaked squares on cookie sheet, cover & freeze. Keep frozen squares in plastic bags.
Bake frozen squares @ 400 deg. for 15 min.
