Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients

• 3 cups flour
• 1/4 cup sugar
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 3/4 tsp salt
• 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
• 1 egg
• Confectioners sugar
• 1/4 cup margarine
• 1 cup raisins
• 1/2 tsp mace

Preparation

Step 1

1. Grease 1 1/2 quart glass casserole. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
2. Mix and sift flour, sugar, salt and baking powder. Cut in butter with pastry blender. Stir in raisins
3. Combine buttermilk, egg and baking soda
4. Stir buttermilk mixture into flour mixture until just moistened
5. Bake 50 minutes. Ice if desired

*1 quart buttermilk makes 2 breads
