Old Fashioned Apple Dumpling

Ingredients
- Syrup:
- 2 c sugar
- 2 c water
- 2 T butter
- 1 t cinnamon
- Dough:
- 2 1/2 c flour
- 4 t baking powder
- 3/4 t salt
- 1/2 c shortening
- 3/4 c milk or less

Step 1
Sift together dry ingredients. Cut in shortening until flour is as fine as cornmeal. Stir in milk to make a soft dough. Turn out on a floured surface and knead lightly about 30 seconds. Roll out a quarter inch thick.
Core and peel six apples. Cut dough into six squares and place an apple in the center of each. Add a dash of sugar and cinnamon and a dot of butter on each.
Fold the dough around the apple and place in a greased baking dish. Cut cross in each and pour hot syrup over all. Bake at 400 for 10 minutes then 375 for 30 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream if desired.
