Ingredients

    cups finely chopped almonds

  • 1/2

    cup butter

  • 1/2

    cup shortening

  • 1 1/4

    cups sugar

  • 3

    tbls light corn syrup

  • 2

    tbls water

  • 1

    cup semi-sweet chocolate pieces, melted

Directions

Spread almonds in shallow pain; toast in a 350 oven until golden. Melt butter and shortening in a large heavy saucepan; add sugar, corn syrup and water. Cook, stirring often, to hard crack state (300 on a candy thermometer). in Remove from heat, stir in 1 cup of the toasted almonds. Pour quickly into a 13x10x1 inch well buttered tray; cool completely. When set, turn our in one piece onto waxed paper. Spread half of the melted chocolate over top, sprinkle with 1/2 cup almonds; let set. Turn candy over; spread with remaining chocolate. Sprinkle with remaining almonds. Let stand until chocolate sets. Break into pieces. Makes 1 lb candy.
