Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 2 c. cake flour
  • 2 T. cocoa
  • 2 T. water
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 T. vinegar
  • 2 T. red food color

Preparation

Step 1

Combine sugar, Crisco, flour, cocoa, pre-mixed water and food coloring, and 2/3 c. buttermilk. Beat until well blended. Add eggs, remainder of milk, and vanilla. Beat 1 min. Mix vinegar and soda (must foam). Stir into batter by hand. Do not beat. Pour into greased 9x13 pan and bake 30 min. at 350 degrees.
Red Cake Icing: 1 c. milk
1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. sugar
1 c. butter or margarine
Add milk gradually to flour. Cook until thick. Cream with mixer: butter, sugar and vanilla. Beat until fluffy. Add white sauce slowly to butter mixture and mix.
