Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound Green split peas
  • 4 Cups water
  • 1 Ham hock or meaty ham bone
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 Clove garlic (if desired)

Preparation

Step 1

1. Wash & drain split peas.
2. Combine all ingredients in kettle with tight fitting lid.
3. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat & simmer covered for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
4. Remove ham hock or bone, cool slightly and cut ham off bone, dice.
5. Add ham back into soup and heat thoroughly, remove bay leave before serving.
**May be thick, heat soup slowly and stir in small amount of stock/water or light cream to thin it out.
